TOEFL 2026 overview

Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT is shorter, partly adaptive and scored from 1 to 6. It still tests Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, but almost every task has changed.

  • Working time
    About 85 minutes
  • Sections
4, always in the same order
  • Scores
1 to 6, in half bands
  • Adaptive
    Reading and Listening

How to use the guides

  1. 01

    Start with the overview

Know every task by name and how the 1 to 6 bands work before you study any of them.

  2. 02

    Open your weakest section

Read the guide page first, then work through its chapters in order. Each chapter is one task type.

  3. 03

    Fill gaps with the foundations

When a chapter points to a grammar or vocabulary lesson, take that detour. That is where most lost points come from.

  4. 04

    Practise under time

Reading about a task is not enough. Try each task with a real timer as soon as you finish its chapter.

Recommended learning path

This six-week path assumes about an hour a day. If your test is sooner, keep the order and shorten each stage. If it is later, add more timed practice in weeks five and six.
