Announcements exist to tell you what changed
Nobody makes an announcement to say everything is normal. Listen for the change: a new time, a new place, a new rule or a cancellation. Then listen for why it changed and what listeners must do.
A three-line note
- What changed: e.g. gym closed Friday.
- Why: e.g. floor repairs.
- What to do: e.g. use the north building, bring ID.
"Attention, students. Because of the storm warning, tonight’s film screening has moved from the outdoor lawn to Hall B. Seating is limited, so please arrive by seven." Question: What should students do?
Answer
Arrive at Hall B by seven o’clock.
The question asks for the action, so the answer combines the new place and the time, not the reason.
Traps
- The old information is mentioned first. Do not choose it.
- Numbers that sound alike: thirteen and thirty.
- An option that is true but not what the question asks.
