What the task looks like

The speaker might ask for help, make a suggestion or share news. Think about what they want from you, not the exact words. A natural reply often uses none of the words in the prompt.

Worked example

"Do you mind if I borrow your charger for a minute?" A. Yes, it is a phone charger. B. Sure, go ahead. C. I mind the battery. D. It charges quickly.

Answer

B. Sure, go ahead.

The speaker is asking for permission. B gives it. A and D repeat "charger" but do not answer the request.

Patterns to know

If you hearA natural reply
Do you mind if I…?Not at all. / Go ahead.
Why don’t we…?Good idea. / I’d rather not, actually.
I can’t find my keys.Did you check your bag?
How did the exam go?Better than I expected.
Have you finished the report?Almost. I just need to check the figures.

Traps

  • Same-word options: they repeat a word from the prompt but answer nothing.
  • Similar-sound options: "walk" for "work", "fifteen" for "fifty".
  • Wrong-time options: answering in the past when the question is about the future.
