Read the question first

These texts are short and full of detail you will not need. Read the question, then scan for the one detail it asks about. Headings, bold text, times and prices are where answers live.

Worked example

Notice: "The Riverside Pool will close for cleaning from 3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays starting 1 May. Morning swim classes are not affected." Question: What is true about the pool from 1 May?

Answer

It is closed on weekday afternoons for two hours.

The right answer paraphrases "3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays". An option saying "classes are cancelled" would contradict the last line.

Question types

  • Purpose: Why was this email written?
  • Detail: When does the offer end?
  • Inference: What can be concluded about the event?
  • Vocabulary in context: The word "waived" in line 3 is closest in meaning to…

Traps

  • Options that copy words from the text but change the meaning.
  • Options that are true in real life but not stated in the text.
  • Small words that flip meaning: only, except, unless, no longer.
