What the task looks like

Some words are already in place. The tiles may include phrases of two or three words, and sometimes there is one extra tile you do not need. About half the answers are questions, which is where most errors happen.

A fast method

  1. 01Read the first speaker’s line. It tells you whether the reply is a question or a statement.
  2. 02Find the main verb first, then its subject.
  3. 03Place the auxiliary (do, have, can, will) before the subject in questions.
  4. 04Add objects, then time and place phrases, which usually go at the end.
  5. 05Read the full sentence in your head. If it sounds wrong, it usually is.
Worked example

Speaker A: "I missed the lecture this morning." Reply: Do you know ___ ___ ___ ___? Tiles: [the notes] [where] [can] [I find]

Answer

Do you know where I can find the notes?

This is an indirect question: after "Do you know", the subject comes before the verb. "Where can I find" would be wrong here.
